Why you should join the debating union

Why you should join the Aberystwyth Debating Union

If the assurance that it's the coolest thing in the world isn't enough, here are a few more good reasons.

Your seminar performance will improve

Seminar tutors have a nasty habit of putting things like "discuss" and "critically analyse" in their questions and they expect you to be able to deliver a cogent answer fluently and confidently. Our training will give you the confidence to speak up and say something worthwhile at the same time. Even better, if you haven't prepared as well as you should have done, we'll give you the ability to make something up which sounds impressive!

You'll do better in exams and essays

One of the things you will learn in the debating society that doesn't really get taught anywhere else is how to contruct a well, structured, cohesive, logically sound argument. These skills are essential if you want to achieve a good grade in your essays and exams because in university, simply knowing the facts just isn't enough.

You'll become a good public speaker

What ever line of work you go into, at some point you will have to address a group of people in a meeting or presentation. Being able to deliver your message fluently will ensure that people take you seriously and fully understand your message.

You'll become more confident

We'll gradually introduce you into the world of debating and before you know it you'll be able to fight off difficult questions and unwelcoming stares effortlessly, no matter where they originate.

You get to go to awesome competitions

A big part of debating is going off to competitions at other universities where you'll get to meet lots of new people, take part in some great debates and enjoy the epic socials afterwards. If you're nervous about competing with more experienced debaters than yourself, don't worry. A debating competition exclusively for novices is held every year towards at the end of October where the entry fees, transport and accommodation will be paid for.

It's cheap

If you join up at fresher's fayre (30th September) membership will only cost £3. If you choose to join up later then it will cost £5, which is still a real bargain considering what you'll get out of it.

Auditor's Welcome
Written by Hamish Arnold
Traditionally, the Auditor's welcome adorning the front page of this fine website has been, well, welcoming. However for some reason the debating society have elected me, a megalomaniac misanthrope to the position of president and I just can't find it in me to pretend to be... welcoming. Anyway, you are probably on this website because you're either a member of the society, or looking to become one so I suppose I should do the decent thing and tell you a little about this fine society.

We meet up every Tuesday to argue about stuff. The beauty of our particular brand of arguing, (as against your normal garden variety brand of arguing) is that each person has 5 minutes to make their point, after which they have to sit down and shut the hell up; the benefit of this being that it prevents people who think that they can win an argument by loudly repeating themselves from winning. Upon the conclusion of the formal debate, we all make a beeline to the pub where you will find members at all stages of disillusionment to talk and drink with. After that, who knows what will happen?

Then there are the external competitions hosted by other universities. This is where the real fun is. You get to go places, make offensive jokes, be surprised at how many people laugh and then head off to the socials where everyone is very drunk and promiscuous. Eventually you might get good and win things and then people will love you like they have never loved me.

Anyway, the debating society is awesome so you should come along, join up and enjoy yourself.
